How much does it cost to open a shop in Bangladesh?
A small grocery in Dhaka typically needs ৳10–15 lakh to open, a pharmacy ৳13–18 lakh, a clothing shop ৳18–25 lakh and a small restaurant ৳25 lakh or more — but the real number depends on location, size and stock. Start from the preset closest to your business and replace every figure with your own quotes.
The three parts of startup capital
- One-time setup costs — shop advance, interior, racks, signboard, licences, equipment and the opening stock.
- Cash reserve — rent, salaries and bills for 3–6 months, because sales take time to grow.
- Monthly running costs — what the shop spends every month whether you sell or not.
Break-even and payback
- Break-even daily sales = monthly running costs ÷ gross margin ÷ open days. Below this you lose money.
- Payback period = setup costs ÷ monthly net profit — how long until the business has paid back what you put in.
Licences you will need
- Trade licence from the city corporation or union parishad.
- e-TIN for the owner, and a BIN (VAT registration) if turnover crosses the threshold.
- Drug licence (DGDA) for a pharmacy; fire and environment clearance for restaurants and larger premises.
Common mistakes
- Spending everything on decoration and keeping too little for stock and reserve.
- Assuming full sales from the first month.
- Not tracking stock — leakage and expired goods quietly eat the margin.
A POS from day one shows daily sales, profit and stock, so you know early if the plan is on track.
