How courier charges work in Bangladesh
Merchant couriers price a parcel on three things: where it goes, how heavy it is, and how much cash the rider collects.
- Delivery area — inside Dhaka is cheapest, Dhaka suburbs (Savar, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Keraniganj…) cost more, and outside Dhaka costs the most.
- Weight — the base charge covers the first kilogram; every extra kilogram (or part of one) adds a fixed amount.
- COD charge — a percentage (usually around 1%) of the cash collected from the customer. Some couriers charge no COD fee inside Dhaka.
Example
A 2.3 kg parcel to Rajshahi with ৳1,500 cash on delivery: base ৳120 + 2 extra kg × ৳20 = ৳160 delivery, plus 1% COD on ৳1,660 collected (product + delivery) = ৳16.60. Your payout is ৳1,660 − ৳160 − ৳16.60 = ৳1,483.40.
Returns are the hidden cost
In f-commerce, 10–25% of cash-on-delivery orders can come back. On a returned parcel you lose the delivery charge, often a return charge, and the packaging and ad cost — while earning nothing. The Profit after returns tab shows your real profit per order shipped and the return rate at which you start losing money.
Ways to cut courier cost
- Take a small advance (the delivery charge) by bKash for outside-Dhaka orders — returns drop sharply.
- Call or SMS to confirm every order before booking.
- Negotiate rates once you send 500+ parcels a month; type your contract rates into the rate table.
