Guide

Writing amounts in words in Bangladesh

Cheques, invoices, money receipts and contracts in Bangladesh show the amount in words to prevent tampering. The convention uses the South Asian lakh and crore system, not millions.

  • 1,00,000 = One Lakh (এক লক্ষ)
  • 10,00,000 = Ten Lakh (দশ লক্ষ)
  • 1,00,00,000 = One Crore (এক কোটি)

Cheque format

Banks expect the words to start with "Taka" and end with "Only", for example Taka Two Lakh Fifty Thousand Only. For fractions, add poisha: Taka Five Hundred and Poisha Fifty Only. Draw a line after "Only" so nothing can be added.

Bangla numbers

Bangla numbers 1 to 99 each have their own word (একুশ, বাইশ, তেইশ…), so they can't be built from tens and units the way English can. This converter uses the correct word for every number.

10 lakh = 1 million, and 1 crore = 10 million. Bangladeshi cheques and documents normally use lakh and crore.
