From carton price to shelf price
Retailers buy by the carton, box or dozen and sell by the piece. To price correctly you need the landed cost per piece: carton price plus transport and labour, divided by the pieces — including any free pieces in the offer.
Example: a carton of 48 at ৳2,880 plus ৳60 transport = ৳2,940 ÷ 48 = ৳61.25 per piece.
Margin vs markup
- Markup is profit as a percentage of cost. 15% markup on ৳61.25 = ৳70.44.
- Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price. 15% margin on ৳61.25 = ৳72.06.
Mixing the two is one of the most common pricing mistakes — a "15% profit" target set as markup gives only a 13% margin.
MRP rules
Packaged goods carry an MRP (maximum retail price). You may sell below MRP but never above it — that is an offence under the Consumer Rights Protection Act 2009. If the MRP does not cover your cost, negotiate a better trade price.
Compare pack deals
Suppliers offer "buy 12, get 1 free" or a lower carton price. Use the second tab to compare the cost per unit of each offer — and remember that bigger packs only save money if you can sell them before they expire.
