Festival bonus rules in Bangladesh
Under rule 111 of the Bangladesh Labour Rules 2015, every worker who has completed one year of continuous service is entitled to two festival bonuses a year, each not more than one month's basic wage. Employers are free to pay more — many pay one month's gross — and many also give a pro-rata bonus to staff with less than a year.
Common practices
- Garments and factories — one month's basic for each of the two Eids (or the worker's own religious festival).
- Government — one month's basic per festival, plus a 20% of basic Boishakhi allowance.
- Private companies — often one month's basic or gross, as set in the appointment letter or service rules.
Pro-rata bonus
For staff under one year, a fair approach is months served ÷ 12 × full bonus, with a minimum service (for example 3 months) before any bonus is due.
Example: basic ৳12,000, joined 9 months before Eid → 9 ÷ 12 × ৳12,000 = ৳9,000.
Paying on time
Bonuses must be paid before the festival. Plan the cash early — at Eid, salary and bonus often fall in the same week.
