Guide

The Bangladesh Bangla calendar

Bangladesh uses a revised Bangla calendar (latest revision 2019) so that national days always fall on the same English date. Pohela Boishakh — Bangla New Year — is always 14 April.

Month lengths

  • Boishakh to Ashwin (first six months): 31 days each
  • Kartik, Agrahayan, Poush, Magh and Chaitra: 30 days
  • Falgun: 29 days, or 30 in a leap year

Bangla year

From 14 April, the Bangla year = English year − 593. Before 14 April it is English year − 594. For example, 14 April 2026 starts 1433 বঙ্গাব্দ.

Why businesses still use it

Many traders open a new ledger — Halkhata — on Pohela Boishakh, and rural markets, rent agreements and land records often use Bangla dates.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is today's Bangla date?

Why does this differ from the West Bengal calendar?
West Bengal follows the traditional Surya Siddhanta calendar, where month lengths vary each year. Bangladesh uses the fixed revised calendar, so dates can differ by a day or two.
Is the Hijri date exact?
The Hijri date is calculated astronomically and can differ by a day from the moon-sighting date announced in Bangladesh.
