Traditional weights in Bangladesh
The metric system is official, but markets still trade in mon and ser, and gold is still sold by the bhori. The standard relations are:
- 1 mon (maund) = 40 ser = 37.3242 kg
- 1 ser = 4 poa = 16 chhatak = 80 tola = 0.9331 kg
- 1 chhatak = 5 tola = 58.32 g
- 1 tola = 1 bhori = 11.664 g = 16 ana = 96 rati
The "40 kg mon"
Many paddy, rice and jute markets now round the mon to 40 kg. A price quoted "per mon" can therefore mean 37.32 kg or 40 kg — a 7% difference. Choose the mon your market uses in the settings.
Converting prices
Price per kg = price per mon ÷ 37.3242 (or ÷ 40 for a 40 kg mon). Example: paddy at ৳1,400 per standard mon = ৳37.51 per kg.
