Gold weight units in Bangladesh
- 1 vori (bhori / tola) = 11.664 grams
- 1 vori = 16 ana → 1 ana = 0.729 g
- 1 ana = 6 rati → 1 rati = 0.1215 g
So "2 ana 3 rati" is 2 × 0.729 + 3 × 0.1215 = 1.8225 grams.
How a jewellery price is built
Gold value = rate per vori ÷ 11.664 × weight in grams. On top of that the shop adds a making charge (মজুরি) — BAJUS sets a minimum of 6% of the gold value, and it is higher for fine design work — plus any stones.
BAJUS (Bangladesh Jewellers Association) announces the rate for 22K, 21K, 18K and traditional gold, often several times a month, following the international price and the dollar rate. The announced rates include the 5% VAT.
Purity
- 22 karat = 91.6% pure (most jewellery)
- 21 karat = 87.5% pure
- 18 karat = 75% pure (stone-set and light jewellery)
- Traditional (সনাতন) — older melting method, the lowest rate
Selling or exchanging old gold
Under BAJUS rules, when you exchange old jewellery the shop deducts a percentage (currently 12%) of the gold value, and the making charge and stones are not paid back. Always keep your cash memo and buy hallmarked jewellery.
