Bangladeshi land units
Land in Bangladesh is measured in several traditional and official units. The standard conversions used by the land office and in Dhaka deeds are:
- 1 decimal (শতাংশ / শতক) = 435.6 sq ft = 100 ojutangsho
- 1 katha = 720 sq ft = 16 chhatak = 1.65 decimal
- 1 chhatak = 45 sq ft
- 1 bigha = 20 katha = 14,400 sq ft = 33 decimal
- 1 acre = 100 decimal = 3.03 bigha = 43,560 sq ft
- 1 hectare = 2.47 acre = 247 decimal
Regional units
The kani and gonda vary by district. In much of the country 1 kani = 40 decimal, while in parts of Chattogram and Noakhali it is 120 decimal. 1 kani = 20 gonda. Set your local value in the calculator.
Measuring a plot
- Rectangle: length × width.
- Uneven four sides: average of two opposite sides × average of the other two — the method land surveyors (amins) use for nearly-square plots.
- Triangle: Heron's formula from the three sides.
Example: a plot 60 ft × 36 ft = 2,160 sq ft = 3 katha = 4.96 decimal.
Before you buy
Always check the area in the khatian (record of rights) and the mutation (namjari) against a fresh survey. A difference of even one decimal in Dhaka can be worth lakhs.
