How zakat is calculated
Zakat is 2.5% of net zakatable wealth that stays at or above the nisab for one lunar year.
Nisab
- Gold: 7.5 tola / vori = 87.48 grams
- Silver: 52.5 tola / vori = 612.36 grams
Many scholars recommend the silver nisab when your wealth is mixed (cash, stock and gold together), because it is lower and benefits more people in need. Islamic Foundation Bangladesh publishes guidance each year.
Business zakat
- Include stock for sale at its current market value, cash in hand and bank, and receivables you expect to collect.
- Exclude fixed assets you use to run the business: shop, furniture, machines, vehicles.
- Subtract debts and bills due now (supplier payables, salaries due, short-term loan instalments).
